CSM 7: Vote Mike Azariah

So the elections for the seventh Council of Stellar (Mis)Management are fast approaching. Of course, you should already know that. If not, get the fuck out from under that rock already. The quality of the candidates this time around is much higher due to the new application mechanics, which others have already gone into in great detail, so I won’t. As a result, there is a much smaller field, and IMO, a greater chance for a High Sec candidate or two to get in. As i am currently care-bearing it up in Caldari space, and as the Null Sec candidates that I would vote for are going to get in with or without my one measly vote, I’ve decided to throw it behind a High Sec candidate.

My vote will go to Mike Azariah. He is the candidate that I most identify with. Care-bearing, High Sec dwelling, casual. But not afraid to venture into Low Sec either. We are both bloggers (though recently it’s been debatable if I could call myself a blogger, with my lack of posts) and we both love to Role Play. I have no idea if he reads my blog, but I definitely read his.

I used to be a blogger like you, then I took an arrow in the knee

The blog has been very quiet lately. I have no insight into my life, which is pretty boring, as a reason. I just haven’t felt like writing, in addition to having a busy weekend last week with the Superstock Teams Champs having been run here in Palmerston North (look it up on Youtube to find out why its awesome, then start booking flights for next year!) I am slowly crafting the next Friday Fiction post, but it probably won’t be ready for this week. Instead this weeks Fiction Friday will consist of me updating the Fiction page, and I might spotlight and comment on some other fiction that I’m quite liking.

In non Eve related news, I’m currently planning out my first Mod for Skyrim. It is my first attempt at making a mod in any game and I am in way over my head. I have a publicly view-able Google Doc that has all the details. You can find it here. If you want to help out, flick me a mention or dm on twitter, or leave a comment here. I could use some quest writing help and will need some help testing it. I still need to actually learn how to use the Creation Kit but that shouldn’t be too hard, I’m a quick learner when it comes to software. I hope to be able to use this mod as a way of getting into video game development, so I’m hoping I can make something that is top notch.

That’s it for today, just a quick update and letting everyone know I’m still here. I should have another post or two out over the weekend, but that will depend on how much of my time the Creation Kit eats!

Brotherly Love Part 5: Answers At Last

The Datapad beeped. “What the fuck?” Its owner exclaimed out loud as he read the message that he has received. “Shit, I gotta go.” He apologized to his guests as he left the room. He hurried to his ship hanger and ordered his crew to prepare his Ares class Interceptor for immediate departure as he heading to the pod gantry and boarded his Capsule. Within minutes he was floating in space as he entered his destination into the navigation computers. The journey took 10 minutes and he was soon docking at a station in the system he was in.

“Thank you for coming on such short notice”
“Not at all Doc. I just want some answers. It’s been too long and I’m ready to put this shit behind me and move on,” Skorp said, his voice tinged with nervousness.
The two had met in the quarters Skorp had been assigned by the station manager. his quarters were just one of the generic rooms that all stations had for visiting Capsuleer’s, Amarr themed like the rest of the station. The Doctor was of True Amarr decent and wore a full length white lab coat.
“So what can you tell me?” Skorp asked nervously.
“Okay, I can see you don’t want to fuck around, right to the point” the Doctor replied. “Basically, your Capsule’s Neural Interface was damaged by a power surge, which in turn was caused by a lose wire which shorted out.”
“So it was all just an accident then,” Skorp said, more a statement than a question.
“Not Quite.”

“Wait, what? What do you mean?” The Doctors reply threw Skorp, and he started to get agitated.
“The security protocols that are supposed to prevent these sort of things from happening were disabled.” The Doctor kept his cool as he replied.
“I’m assuming you know who did it? Otherwise you had better start running.” Skorp’s anger was obvious now, his temper starting to get the better of him.
“Yes I do. I’ve been told you will pay quite a large chunk of ISK for this information?”
“10mil, if the info is good enough. Now stop wasting my time and fucking tell me already so I can go and kill the bastard,” Skorp said calmly.
“Fair enough. The person who actually carried out the sabotage is some gambler named Karras Hearn, he had a lot of gambling debts, which were paid for by the person who hired him, in exchange for doing the job. His employer goes by the name ‘The River’. It’s a poker reference, in case you were wondering.”
“Fuck.” Skorp lost his cool and started trashing the room.
“What is it?” The Doctor asked while cowering in the corner.
“Karras Hearn is the name of my brother. Whoever this ‘The River’ person is, there isn’t anywhere in New Eden or Anoikis where they can hide. I’ll find this bastard and make them fucking pay.”

“Actually, I’ve already found him. You see, I’m very good at what I do. I may work as a doctor, but that’s just a front for what I’m really good at. I find people and information. Only one person has ever managed to elude me in the last 5 years. The Broker. Dudes a fucking ghost.” The Doctor calmly informed Skorp.
“Fuck you work fast,” Skorp said matter-of-factly.
“Karras has very helpful. As soon as i found him, he flipped sides and has been helping me ever since. get your Datapad and I’ll upload all the info you need to it. I advise you to take a Battlecruiser.”
“Excellent. I’ll transfer the ISK to you immediately. Thank you for your help. Tell Karras to get in contact with me, I’m sure I can find some work for him.” Skorp took his Datapad back and transferred the ISK to the Doctor. As he boarded his pod and prepared to leave, an ear to ear grin spread across his face. “An early birthday present. Time for some birthday fun.’ He thought

Journal Excerpts: Formatting

While writing today’s fiction post I had an interesting thought: should a post written as an excerpt from a characters journal be properly formatted, with correct punctuation, or should it be formatted as that character would have written it in their journal, with their own formatting and punctuation, and their own spelling and grammar style? Please let me know what you think in the comments, or if you have your own blog, write a post about it! If you do write your own blog post, please post a link to it in the comments for me.

You’re probably thinking “well, what do you think Skorp?” and I’m not going to deprive you of an answer! My personal line of thought is that each character is different, and one of the best ways to express this difference in a medium such as a blog post in the form of journal excerpts is to have a different formatting style for each character, including incorrect punctuation for a character that just doesn’t give a shit what Grammar Nazi’s think.

So far the two character’s who have had journal excerpts published on my blog have had a more formal writing style. This is intentional, as one is a former CEO and founder of a corporation, and is still in a position where they need to be formal, and the other is used to filing reports, which need to be properly formatted with correct punctuation. As a special sneak-peak for those of you insane enough to actually read my inane ramblings, I’ll you in on a little secret I’ve been holding onto for a couple of months now.

I have another character in the works. This new character is younger than the others I have so far introduced, and is going to exhibit some of the stereotypical traits of the real worlds younger generation: those who are just now entering adult-hood, having grown up with text messaging and gaming being the norm. The immature gamer who snigger’s at the mention of boobs and is generally a bit of a dick, the kind of person you met on Xbox Live or in World or Warcraft. This character isn’t going to give a shit about things like punctuation because his teenage years have been in an environment where punctuation is a foreign concept.

I’m not going to tell you who she is, but there are a few clues and hints about and some of you may be able to figure it out. Even if you do, I won’t tell you, you will have to wait until the character is formally revealed here on the blog, which I haven’t actually got planned yet, although I’m hoping that by June the character will actually exist within the Eve Online Universe!

Brotherly Love Part 4: Family Business

Excerpt from the personal journal of Darth Skorpius.

YC 114.01.19

Capsuleer’s are a fucking weird bunch. Some of us are cruel, mean-spirited ass-holes who just want to see everything burn. Some of us just don’t give a shit as long as we get our ISK. But then there are some of us, albeit a minority, that actually care about others. I like to think that’s where I fit in. I treat my crews like actual people, making sure they are well paid and their families well cared for if they die while employed by me. And while I own slaves, they aren’t treated like slaves, they are essentially just employee’s, although they can’t leave the designated areas where they work.

My sister and her girlfriend started working for me earlier this month. Marrada, my sister, is the new Personal Welfare Specialist for 352 Industries, her job is to make sure that all the employees, from ship crews to station-side personal, are being properly cared for and looked after. She also makes sure they are being paid what they should. Her girlfriend, Mila, is a freelance journalist, and has been given the job title of Media Relations Manager. She deals with the media on behalf of the corporation, providing them with interviews and other articles they request about the corp. She has also taken up a position with Tech 4 Media Group, as a freelance reporter providing them with stories about, and interviews with Capsuleer’s. To help give you a leg up I agreed to be the first person she interviewed for Tech 4, which has already been published.

The corporation is still chugging along nicely, it’s starting to become a bit of a family business, I joked about this with Ambein the other day and he said he was perfectly happy with me bringing in family members to help run the place. He said he was pleased with the new hiring’s and said it was nice to have some eye candy around the office. The corp is in the process of moving into the area that I am currently operating in, in preparation for some other stuff that we have planned, it should be a really exciting time over the next couple of months, between what’s happening with the alliance I am currently part of, and whats happening with 352 Industries. I might have to actually look for my brother, and get him involved in all this too, although I have no idea if he would even talk to me, its been 4 years since we last spoke.

Tech 4 Interview

A couple of weeks ago, I gave an interview for a young journalist looking to make it big in the media industry. That interview has been published by Tech 4 News as part of a new series of articles and interviews on Capsuleer’s. The full article can be found here. What follows is the transcript for the interview itself, provided to me by the person who conducted the interview, Mila

Mila
Why do you pay your crews so much?
Darth Skorpius
Why not? I mean, there’s no shortage of people volunteering to crew a Capsuleers ship, as even the shittiest among us still pay their crews, even if they don’t know it and the ISK doesn’t come out of their wallets, the crews are still being paid. I honestly have no idea where the ISK is coming from, and nor do most Capsuleer’s, but one theory is that CONCORD pays them. I decided to take a more active role, as a result, turn-over rates have dropped dramatically, even when the ship is docked and not doing anything, the crews are still being paid, so there is no desire for them to find other income sources.

M
What do you mean by other income sources?
DS
[Laughs] Well, there’s no point in them sitting around in station not earning anything is there? So some of them might turn to illegal activities, drug smuggling and dealing, that sort of thing. But most of them just go and find another ship to crew, so when then you have to replace those crew members who have jumped ship. By paying them they way I do, they are more than happy to it around in station twiddling their thumbs.

M
What sort of things do your crews do to keep themselves from going stir crazy while in station?
DS
Most of them are actually studying, so they can be better at their jobs, or so they can move up the ladder to another position. Others just play Holo-vid games. One is actually writing a book. I have no idea what the book is about, but I have been promised a copy once its been published. Oh and there’s a rumor that some of my Raven’s crews members are putting together a movie that will be based entirely within the confines of my raven, with a cameo by yours-truly!

M
Sounds like you let them have a lot of freedom
DS
Yeah, when we undock, everyone has a job to do, until I give the stand down order. after that, they have a bit of freedom, as long as they drop what they are doing when the alarms sound. In station, after they have carried out their assigned duties, they are free to do what they want, as long as they return to the ship when required.

M
Why go to such lengths? Is it really worth the cost?
DS
Yes it is worth the costs. I have an almost zero percent turn-over rate, its less than 1%. And I only have a turn-over rate because losing ships is inevitable. If i could fit all my crew members with cloning tech, I would, but that’s not possible. Yet.
M
Yet? care to elaborate on that?
DS
[Laughs] There’s not a whole lot I can say really, just that there is some new tech in development for ground based combat, “Drop-suits” with some pretty basic cloning tech in them, there aren’t a whole lot of details available at the moment as those involved with the development of the tech are keeping tight lipped. Hopefully more details will become available in the next 6 months.

M
So the Empires are about to get some new toys to kill each other with?
DS
As far as I’m aware, some of them already have these new toys, but not at a level where they are willing to talk about it yet, Capsuleers will be getting these new toys to help them fight their wars at some point I would imagine, it would be hard to keep Capsuleers from taking advantage of the new tech, although I’m sure CONCORD and the Empires will do everything they can to keep us from getting our hands on it.

M
Talking to some of your family and friends from when you were a child, you were a bit of a dick when you were younger, what changed?
DS
Honestly, I got bored. Somewhere during my second year as a Capsuleer I realised that my attitude and acting like a dick wasn’t achieving anything, and that even though i fit right in as a Capsuleer, it just didn’t feel right to me, so I made the decision to chance. I started taking a more active role in the welfare of my crews, and noticed a big improvement in ship performance. Before, my crew were a bit sluggish to respond, nothing major, but sometimes the warp drives would take a second longer to kick in than they should, and the guns a second longer to reload. Little things like that. After the change in my attitude towards the crew, those little things went away. I also noticed that the crew were a lot happier, i used to avoid them as much as possible when in station, often just staying my pod, but after the change in my attitude, I started to interact with them more, which made the crew even happier.

M
Wow, it really made a difference.
DS
It really does. I got to know the guys guys running the crew, the crew chiefs I call them. They are the ones that actually keep everyone in-line, as I can’t just step out of my pod and pimp slap someone who isn’t doing their job now can I? If it wasn’t for the crew chiefs, I don’t know what I would do. And one in particular I owe my life to, as when my pod malfunctioned back in YC 110, he made sure the Sisters of EVE got to me in time.
M
I’m guessing he’s retired now.
DS
Sort of. He still works for me, but he doesn’t work on any ship’s anymore. He is the head of Human Resources for 352 Industries, overseeing all of their personnel. He’s a real people person, so when he came to me in November YC 112 and said he was, and this is a direct quote, “getting too old for this shit”, [laughter], I asked if he was still interested in working for me and offered him a desk job with 352 Industries, which thankfully he accepted.

M
Your sister used to work for the Sisters of EVE, did that create any tension between the two of you?
DS
Not really. If it wasn’t for the accident back in YC 110, I don’t think we would have ever got back in touch with each other. I was only vaguely aware that i even had a sister until the accident, and she had no clue what my Capsuleer name was. While I was waiting for CONCORD to give me my Capsuleers Licence, we kept in touch, but once I got my licence, I was so busy being an immortal that I kinda forgot about her. After the accident, I was so messed up that I didn’t know who I was, let alone who anyone else was, and it took a while before i truly remembered I had a sister. Now that we have reconnected, I’m hoping that we can get to know each other.

M
Thank your for taking the time to sit down with me and answer my questions. Is there anything else you would like to add?
DS
Not a problem. For anyone interested in following my adventures, please visit my personal Galnet site.

Crippled Caracal

This is a transcript from the security cameras on-board my Caracal class cruiser the day of my accident.

YC 110.09.[REDACTED]
X-7OMU – Planet V

The ship slammed to a stop as it dropped out of warp. “What the fuck was that?” Screamed the crew chief. “Which one if you fucks has been messing with the inertial dampener, and why the fuck did we drop out of warp? Give me an engineering report NOW!”
“Capacitor, normal. Warp drives, normal. Sublights, normal. I’m not seeing anything wrong here Captain, everything is green.” replied the chief engineering officer. “No, wait, Neural Interface, status UNKNOWN.”
“Shit shit shit. Anything but unknown, give me offline any day, but anything but unknown. FUCK.” The crew chief was trying to keep clam. “Okay, someone tell me where the fuck we are.”
“We are near the fifth planet of the X-7OMU system, deep in null sec. Sir? Its a Sisters system.” The navigation officer was calm and to the point.

“Alright everyone. Initiate evac procedure five, two, six, six, three. And send a distress call to the Sisters, get them to come pick us up. MOVE!” With that, the crew chief started walking briskly.
“Where are you going Captain?” asked a member of the crew while the bridge crew was evacuating.
“To the gantry room, need to check his vitals, make sure hes still alive in there.” replied the crew chief. “And for the last time, don’t fucking call me captain. I’m not the captain, I’m the crew chief. The captain is floating in a pod filled with goo, and his fucking neural interface isn’t responding. now hurry the fuck up and get your ass off this boat now!” The crew chief snapped back, starting to lose his cool.

It took the crew chief longer than he would have liked to make it to the gantry room, he took a wrong turn on at least three occasions, but it could have been more, he lost track after that point. When he finally got there, he breathed a sigh of relief, soon he could get off this floating death-trap. After taking a moment to get his breath back, he briskly walked over to the holo-vid screen next to the gantry. “Fuck.” He swore as he checked his captains vitals. Elevated pulse, brain activity all over the place. “What the fuck is going on here?” He thought to himself. “This is fucking ridiculous!”

Suddenly, klaxons started blaring and lights started flashing as an alarm sounded. “What the fuck is that?” The crew chief swore to himself as he checked the screen in front of him. “Oh shit, the self destruct!” He took off running at full speed, tearing through the hallways to the nearest escape pod. he reached it in less than a minute despite being deep in the bowels of the ship. “Launch the fucking pods NOW!” He yelled at the crew who were waiting for the command to be given to launch all pods. “Tell the others to launch now,” he managed to breath as he skidded to a halt just inside the doors of the escape pod, slamming his fist on the button to close the pods doors as he did so. With less than 10 seconds to spare all pods reported they were clear of the ship. All view ports on the escape pods had faces pressed up against them as the Caracal exploded moments before the Sisters of EVE arrived.

Brotherly Love Part 3: Family Reunion

YC 114.01.01
Osmon II – Moon 1 – Sisters of EVE Bureau

The lights in the room flickered as they turned on, illuminating its occupants as they sized each other up. One was female, the other male, both were Caldari, of Achuran decent. Neither of them spoke, just stood there awkwardly, wondering who would be brave enough to make the first move. For them, time stood still. After what felt like an eternity, the male spoke, but in reality only a couple of minutes had passed since the female had entered the room.

“Hi Marrada, its been a while.” He spoke nervously, not knowing what to say.
“Yeah, it has. Three and a half years,” Marrada replied. “Last time I saw you, your memory was shot and you barely knew who I was. That accident really messed you up.”
“Don’t remind me. That was an expensive trip to null.” Skorp replied calmly, starting to regain his confidence. “Pend Insurance refused to acknowledge the loss, claiming they had no records of the ship being insured, other than the base insurance level that all ships have. And the fittings weren’t very cheap either.”
“Yeah, they can be a bitch to deal with sometimes, thankfully I don’t have much to do with them, the Sisters have other means of insuring their vessels and employees.”

“Thanks for sending me those reports the Sisters had on my accident and the time I spent in their care while I recovered,” Skorp said.
“No problem, it was the least I could do, I just wish I could have stayed and helped you recover, but my superiors didn’t feel it was necessary, and my training had finished, so I had to leave,” she replied.
“Don’t worry about it, I barely even recognized you, and hardly knew who you were anyway, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference.”
“Yeah, well, I knew who you were, that was enough for me,” Marrada responded. “Did get the journal entries?” She asked him curiously.
“Yip, they were very helpful. Glad to see you were keeping yourself out of trouble,” he laughed.

The two siblings were sitting on the couch in the Amarr themed quarters, laughing as they shared stories with each other. They had been sitting there talking each others ear off for more than an hour when there was a knock at the door. Skorp called out and invited the visitor in. She was a small, light skinned Caldari Deteis, with a light frame. Her hair was jet black, shoulder length and tied in a pony tail. She had medium sized, perky breasts that were barely contained by the black skin-tight tank top she wore. She had a matching mini-skirt that barely reached her knees, and 4 inch high heels in black leather. She moved with the grace and poise of a dancer.

“Skorp, this is my girlfriend, Mila. Mila, this is my brother, Jaron, but he prefers to be called Skorp.” Marrada introduced them. “Mila has been keeping me out of trouble for two years now.
“I can see why.” replied Skorp, adjusting himself to avoid an embarrassing situation. “I can’t wait to get to know her better.”
“Oi, hands off, shes mine,” Marrada warned him. “Besides, I doubt you could handle her anyway, shes more of a handful than she looks.”
“We’ll see about that,” he teased.

“So, what were you doing with the lights off when i got here?” Marrada asked teasingly.
“Oh, just testing the new Ocular Implant I got for Christmas, it’s got Night Vision and Infra-Red filters, and a nice low-light setting. It’s from Genolution, brand new tech, its like nothing I’ve ever seen before.”
“I heard about those, Genolution gave one to almost every Capsuleer in the cluster,” Mila responded. “The Core Augmentation Implant set is truly an amazing feat.”
“I see someone likes to follow Capsuleer news.” Skorp nonchalantly observed. “How about you two ladies come work for me, at 352 Industries?” He asked.

“Marrada, I could use a new Personal Welfare Specialist, last one resigned just before the holidays to go take care of sick family members. Mila, I have no clue what the fuck you actually do, but I’m sure we could find something you can do for the corp. What do you say?”
“Hmm, that’s an interesting offer. I’m still on contract with the Sisters, but I’m due for another review this month, and have the option to terminate my employment without penalty then, I’ll have to think about it.” Marrada replied after giving the offer some thought. “As for Mila, well she can speak for herself.”
“Well, I’ve got another job offer I’m looking into, but in the mean time, sure, I haven’t got anything better to do. At least, not when Marrada’s busy I don’t!” Mila replied with a cheeky look at Marrada.

Brotherly Love Part 2: Ambulation Ambush

YC 113.12.31
Osmon II – Moon 2 – Sisters of EVE Bureau

A cloaked and hooded figure hurried through the corridors of the bustling space station. The comm unit in her pocket beeped. A smile crept across her face as she reads the message. It contained just two words. He’s here. She quickly disappeared down a small side corridor, knowing it would take her to her new destination quicker than the main corridor she had been following. While she walked she thought about what she was going to do when she got there. Would she hug him? Would she punch him in the face? Would she scream and yell at him? Thoughts raced through her mind faster than light speed, nervousness crept in. How would he react? What would he do? Would he be happy to see her? Would he be angry with her?

The closer to the Capsuleer decks she got, the less people there were, as was normal on most stations in the cluster. Five minutes had passed since she received the message that would change the lives of at least two people, possibly more. By now she figured he would have exited his pod and be showering to get the pod goo off, so she had at least another five before he would think of leaving his quarters, more than enough time to get through security and locate his room. She looked at her watch. “Nearly Midnight,” she thought to herself. Normal people would be tucked up in bed on almost any other night of the year, but as it was New Years Eve, most were out partying. Almost everyone she passed in the corridors had been drinking, many of them visibly so.

As a member of the Sisters of EVE, there weren’t many opportunities to drink. It’s never a good idea to drink when you are on call, and working for the Sisters means you are almost always on call, or working. The Capsuleer’s make sure of that, if you aren’t busy checking on crews, or tending to the injured from the latest Raven to dock at the station, there is a mountain of paperwork and reports to fill out. Or crew members who need to be interviewed. Part of it is the Sisters fault, so many rules and regulations that you have to follow. If you didn’t, you could have your pay docked, or be sent to the middle of null, to serve on a shit hole station in the middle of a war-zone. Still, it does have its perks. Marrada smiled as she thought of Mila’s naked body.

Hopefully her girlfriend wouldn’t be too upset that she had been deserted, especially on a night like tonight. She hated the way she sulked when she was angry. Maybe Mila would spank her, she loved a good spanking. She shook the thoughts from her head, there would be time for that later, now it was time to focus on meeting someone she hadn’t seen for more than 3 years, someone she once knew but had barely spoken to in 4 years. Someone she had looked up to when she was older and who she hoped to get to know again. Someone who had looked after her so many times when her parents weren’t home. Who had taught her so much about life. Her oldest brother. He had visited the station she was on several times, and had even done some work for the Sisters agents that worked there.

She had been back at Sisters HQ in null sec, for a refresher course on basic first aid, and had missed out on the chance to talk to him. After her return she had been so busy that even though he was still only a couple of jumps away, she had been unable to go and visit him. But now, on the one day a year when everyone got the night off, he had come back, and she finally had a chance to meet him. She reached his room shortly after midnight, the maze of corridors and her own unfamiliarity with this particular area of the station making her journey slightly longer than she had intended. The door was open so she knocked politely, took a deep breath, and entered the room.
